  1. Hi

I'm absolutley terrified of spiders. I can't even look at a photo of one. This is the only yet huge downside of leaving the UK. Anyway I thought I might have hypnotherapy.

Do you really see many of them? Even typing this is givin me goosebumps. It all very well me saying yeah lets go to Australia. But when the time comes and I may not want to take the leap if I am goin to be met with the 8 legged things.

I'm really hoping you are all goin to say you never see them. lol.

    Fingers crossed.

LOL, i take it you didnt see my little 'tantrum' on Wanted Down Under ? lol
I ,like you was petrified of anything than crawled, buzzed or flew close to my head, lol, thankfully (and i know you wont believe me) you do get better over here. Once you stop thinking theres a deadly creature hiding behind every door waiting to pounce you start to 'forget about them. Honest , you do , it took about a year but i am so brave now i can get near enough to stamp on one, lol.
Golden rule here is to make sure you have a good pestspray of the inside and outside of the house every year.

Cal`s right! WE have seen less spiders this year tho! (4 years in for us). My cousin has been here over 50 years and only ever seen 1 snake!

  4. Hi Cal, thanks for the reply. Are you talking about th tv prgramme "wanted down under"? My husband has just this second seen the programme and set it to record - how wierd? Anyway I am tryin to not care but its easier said than done. I hope that I can get over it or at least tone it down a bit.

    Thanks Mel.

yes we made the pilot episode for the BBC a couple of years ago.
It scares you morereading about all the spiders, snakes etc but once your here and it sinks in that not many can actually kill you and as Jo said you dont see all that many , my motto, what you cant see dont worry about! lol
My 5 yr old and 10yr old are always playing outside barefoot, we live on acrerage too, so if it was 'that bad' theres no way i would allow them to do that.
You will be fine ,im sure

If it makes you feel any better.....The spiders in the UK are actually the most deadly spider in the whole entire world, it's just that they are unable to pierce human skin and you would never feel them trying. But do you want to be in the UK when they evolve!!!??? I am terrified of Spiders, my partner believes I have the worst case of Arachnaphobia that he has ever come across - But I am here! I made the move! Don't let your fears stop you from making the best decision you will ever make!

I didn't and I love it here! Sure I am a little wary of the spiders, but just keep your security screens shut - And hey presto! Out of sight - Out of Mind!

  7. Hi Cal,

Well I hope so. Its stupid that being scared of the beasties is the one thing that is holding me back. I keep imaging them but it just scares me. I think we've only taped from series 4 so I may have missed you. Great that you were on the show - does that mean you're famous now?

  8. See- the fact that you write just keep your security screens shiut gives me images of all the beasties getting together to form an army to get me out scares me no end. I really think I need hypnotherapy. But it is comforting knowing that you are terrifed of spiders and you still did it. I just imagine getting off the plane, settling in then seeing one and they packing my stuff then going home. :frown:

i'm terrified of spiders to..well anything creepy-crawley if i'm totally honest. the only spider i saw when i have been to oz was some massive thing in the rainforest...so it was in it's own home and i didn't get anywhere near it. i just stood patting the woman next to me saying 'have you seen the size of that thing..OMG!' she was an aussie and calmly replied 'yeah he does look a mean critter, but NOT as big as the ones back home, still they are good for keeping the daddy longlegs down??? forgive me did i miss the point? daddy longlegs ...massive spider!! although i hate daddylong legs but i can just spray those if they don't decide to fly at you beforehand.
the only other nastie i saw and felt was a huge cockroach run over my foot in macdonalds in sydney , stood up screaming like the big girl i am . needless to say i left my big mac n fries my appeitite suddenly deminished:frown:
still i survived and have been back to oz since and still love it . i just don't look for things, i know they are there but what i can't see i don't fret about. just wish my visa would move as fast as the cockie:laugh:

We've only been here a year but seen plenty of snakes - none anywhere that would threaten you though - all in their own environment. Spiders are the same, just leave 'em be.

No, the truly annoying beasties to watch out are the ones that actually target you like mozzies and ants. These buggers are everywhere and really do ruin some days out, it's bloody annoying to have some nice countryside to explore, but know the moment you sit down or stop moving something will be making a beeline for your blood. Once you get used to this you realise why the beaches are so popular!

I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about the spiders and snakes before we travelled out for a visit last year, even going as far as kicking the toilet bowl in Melbourne Airport prior to use as I'd heard the wee buggers hid under the rim just waiting for a pasty white arse to plonk itself down.

But a couple of days in I forgot all about them. Out in Moree we saw a black snake sunning itself at the far end of the large garden which I must admit was a bit of a "EEK!!!" moment but as soon as it was approached it slithered away at a great rate of knots.

My first Huntsman is going to be interesting as they are bloody big but I'm not too worried about the rest.
