hey all ,would it be wise to move to australia with two young chilldren if you thought you may not get work right away and no garantee of long term work if you do get a job,im not looking on the dull side of it but well not have much money with us,

    Tough one.
We moved without jobs but that was a few years ago. I think it depends on your occupations and if you are prepared to do anything (work wise) until you find and secure work in your choosen trades. What jobs do you do?

  3. Thats a hard one !
I tend to agree with Cal...there is work ...just depends on what work your willing to do until you get the right job for you. What area of work are you looking at ?

You should be able to pick up a labouring job relatively quick (within your first few weeks). The money won't be as good as you want but it would be a good starting block to learn the aussie way of doing things and to get to know who is who. Maybe staying in commutable distance of the SE QLD growth corridor will be an idea as building etc is still going on with a couple of new purpose built estates due to go up this year at some point.

  6. Hi Hannash,
My husband is in the contruction industry and tells me there should be alot of work coming up. Most businesses source jobs through tender websites such as www.tenderlink.com & www.tender.net
however most of these website charge a subscription fee. You can also register on the Q'ld & Brisbane Government websites to receive notification of new jobs and look in the tender section of the Saturday Courier Mail paper. There are labourer jobs out there to start you off however many want to pay you per hour through your own business so you would need to set up a business and pay your own tax etc. like a subcontractor. Hospitality roles for your wife should be much easier to find through the normal websites and Courier Mail paper (www.couriermail.com.au)

    Cheers

We moved over 6 years ago. I had a job waiting but my other half didnt. He managed to secure one pretty quickly but he is a bus driver.
If you are prepared to step up and do any work to get some money behind you, you could be ok.

If you are realistic about what you can have rather than what you think you should have.....you`ll do fine.

you see bris nurse,, this is the thing, im hearing more and more off,we dont want all the best of stuff ,we would need to have like for like or even somewhere close to it ,but weve come to terms with the fact we are going to be nowhere near it ,houses are a shockingly high price ,

If you are going to be nowhere near what you want then it is the wrong time for you to move. You need to be gaining something from the move. To move and go backwards would be madness IMHO.
Where abouts are you looking to buy a house???

hey there ,we were hopeing to buy a new house ,and didnt mind if it was small, one of the new developments at north lakes ,dont mind if it hasnt a pool ,all the new builds dont normally anyway, dont mind if a semi either ,we may be going with 30 grand sterling which is about 45 aussie if im near enough, half of that eaten up by starting up and getting there leaving us about 20 aussie for a deposite on a house ,most of the cheapest houses weve seen are no less than 400 aussie dollars , our mortgage will end up being about 1200 or 1300 pounds sterling a month, thats what im thinking, maybe im not that accurate but just off the top of my haed

    Hi Hannash,

Your figures, in the general sense, are not far off the mark. For example I've just arranged a mortgage for Brit family for $370 at under $2500 a month. But I have to stress that everybody's situation and needs are different and because of that, mortgages can be tailored to suit the individual. Most lenders will require a minimum 5% deposit, so as you say, $20k for a $400k purchase. But then there are additional costs such Lenders Mortgage Insurance and legal fees. Some of these can be added to the loan amount; some you will have to pay upfront, which will be in addition to your deposit. However, you should be entitled to the First Home Buyers Grant (FHOG) which in QLD is $7k which can be used to offset any of these costs.

If you require any specific advice, please PM me. All of my advice, knowledge and assistance is totally free and without obligation. Check out the website.

    Cheers

My advice.... the life style and the opportunities are there if you pull together, try looking at the sunshine coast.. get out of the brisbane ring.. rather like looking in london or lincolnshire if you get my drift. Queensland government give you a helping hand with 1st home buyer and rents in sunshine coast more like 400 pounds a month ........ go on real estate australia website, buy a map of queens land on amazon and then you can put in areas and see it on the map........ good luck

    Hi Hannash,

There is no problem about applying for a mortgage because of your age (most lenders will take applications from people up to 70), and you can have it over 30 years. At the moment, lenders are fighting tooth and nail for new business with discounted rates and other incentives such as no application fees etc
As for the tax rebate, most migrants find that they get a relatively large rebate after their first tax return. It can easily run into the thousands, but obviously every case is different and you need to have earned money to be able to get a rebate.

    Cheers

    Hiya hun:D
Like the old saying goes lifes what you make it, and depends how bad you all want to be in oz.
You will find there are always peeps that will help fellow poms out:D No matter what.
What work are you both looking for?? Do you both drive cos that is half the battle. I don't drive, but were doing fine so no problem:D Driving makes life here far easier too, in my opinion. Do you have any family here?? Have you been to oz before??
If you are in a position to wait a while longer then do, but make sure you are 100% sure.
Where abouts where you thinking of moving too??
There are always jobs here but depends what you want to do.

You can still get bargains on house buying here just have to shop arround and depends if you want to do some reno yourselves.
We were gob smacked last year as we went to look at a house in Burpengary, 1 acre 3bed house plus swimming pool $430 but they would have taken a reduction as no one was biting. If I would have had the brass we would have bought there and then. Was massive with 3 huge sheds more like small houses lol. Gob smacked!!!
So still bargains to be had:D

Wish you all the best for whatever you decide:D keep us all posted too:D
We didn't come with much at all but that's another story and no kids.

    Good luck and cheers

hey briggy, im a bricklayer ,wife is a catering assistant ,we both drive ,and would both work hard ,thats why weve got to were we are ,we have a 4 bed house in a class area nice car ,no credit cards ,smallish mortgage ,if we do get a visa it means starting from scratch at the bottom just as weve got fairly financially secure ,the draw is that a new start and surroundings would be the most exciting adventure ever for all involved and im sick to death of the 6 month winters, were the kids virtually have to hibernate during that time
