    Hi there,

We are moving to Brisbane in the Autumn (no date yet). My Daughter will be 15 in September and my Son was 11 in April. What school year will they start in January ?and does anyone know, will we have difficulty getting either in to schools (especially the big one as I know she is in the senior years)?

Many thanks, looking forward to coming but this is my 'laying awake' topic!!!

    L:wink:

    Hi
My son is 11 he is in YR7 which is the last year of primary. He will start high school in January after the big holidays.
I think your daughter would go straight into YR10 at high school.
From experience i have found the schools very helpful when you go to enrol and they will tell you for sure what years your children will suit considering their previous education and results.

When you say "the Autumn" is that the British Autumn or the Australian one????

Anyway - right now, your children should be in year 6 and year 10. So in Jan 2011 they would go into 7 and 11.

I have girls - one turned 11 in Feb this year and she is in year 6 - this is the correct year for her to be in (I state this because here in Australia SO many people hold their kids back a year)

My eldest turns 14 next week and she is in year 9. Again, she is in the correct year for her age.

Cal - I assume your son turns 12 before the end of this year......hence the fact that he is in year 7 right now?

    This table might help you.

    Hi Rudi and Cal,

Thankyou so much for your replies.

Yes I see what you mean about Autumn....LOL. Yes I mean UK Autumn so we will be there in November, just in time to melt i gather!!!

I may be back in touch when I know exactly where the company is going to place my Husband but we do know it is south Brisbane way.

The School year means I can get them in at the start of the year and so hopefully they will settle better. Do you think it would be worth getting a tutor to help the eldest catch up? she is considered bright here, but will probably be behind some things there....

    Lovely to hear from you

I wouldn't worry about tutors etc for now. You may find your daughter is ahead in some areas and behind in others - but if she is bright then she will catch up. Some schools offer students study classes before and after school anyway if they need extra help. One thing to consider though is that the year 10 kids are currently making their selections for their years 11 and 12 subjects - these are two year courses if you choose an academic route and will lead to qualifications to gain entry to university. It would be wise to contact schools in the areas you are thinking about so you can discuss this sort of thing so that your daughter does not miss out on subjects she would like to do.

It's all still a bit hazy for me but I am gradually discovering how the senior education system works and how the OP (Overall Position) system works in terms of gaining university entry places.

    Good luck

    Love

Hi, My son turned 11 in June and he's in year 6 at present. Schools finish for the long Summer holidays in Dec. Your son should start in year 7 at the end of January. We live in the western suburbs and it isn't a problem getting into most schools unless you go private which a lot of people do! I don't think your daughter should have any problem fitting into the education system here.

Good luck with the move
