    Hello,

We are a family of three, OH works in the construction industry, i work in a bank (or at least i did, at the moment i'm a lady of leisure) and we have a 12 yr old daughter.

We have been living in Adelaide for the last 5 and a bit years, but moved to Brisbane at the beginning of this month with my husbands new job. We have taken a rental in Redland Bay and we moved in at the weekend, until we decide to buy.

We would really like to meet people and make some friends. Surely there must be more Brits than us in the area...??

If anyone would like to catch up on the weekend or maybe a coffee during the week, please get in touch.

    Cheers,

    Jackie:smile:

    Hi Jackie

we lived in Adelaide for 2 1/2 years and been in brissy for 2 years. I would say that it is much harder to meet people and build up a social life here than in Adelaide not sure why that is and for the first year we all wanted to run back to Adelaide. I think Brissy grows on you slowly.

I would say that there are a small group of us, mostly welsh, on scottish that meet up most Fridays at the Yeronga Swimming Pool (the coffee shop there). I think it might take you about 45 mins to get there but you are always welcome to join us, we are going tomorrow.

If you are interested pm and I will send you details. If not we can arrange to meet on a weekend although we are all based in the south western suburbs.

    Hiya

Not actually in Oz yet but arrive on 4th July. Heading forCaloundra on the Sunshine Coast for the first four weeks but don't know what the work situation is like and may have to move nearer the city.. Where in Redland Bay are you? I have friends in North Lakes and they love it? What in the construction business does your partner do ? My OH is a Plasterer but not sure where we will end up.

I have two kids aged 10 and 6 so am looking for a nice family area - whats it like where you are?

Just wanted to say Hi and good luck with making new friends. Maybe catch up as we too need all the friends we can.

    Take care

    Hi Nicola,

Which area of Adelaide did you live in? With Adelaide being such a small place (with the whole networking thing that goes on there) you never know, we could possibly have a friend in common.

Thank you for the invite. We won't make it tonight but may make it some other time, my daughter loves to swim. A 45min drive is really no distance at all here in Oz:smile:

    Take care,

    Jackie

    Hi Lillian

Not long until you get out here...you must be very excited!

We're in a new development area of Redland Bay. We're only renting at the moment but will propbably buy in this area as it has a nice community feel to it. There are a lot of new houses being built in this area, so lots of young families moving here. We had looked at quite a lot of suburbs and this one just seemed to tick all the boxes for us. From what i've found so far, bearing in mind i've only been here since last Friday, it has a nice little village with a few shops, cafes and a tavern. A large village green with picnic benches and the ferry over to one of the islands, which i think is where you go for a beach as Redland Bay is mostly mangrove scrub from what i can tell. There is a larger shopping mall not too far away at Victoria Point.

My OH is a plant manager for a large construction group..a Scotsman, working for an Irish company in Australia:laugh: Will your husband be working for himself out here? We have a friend in Adelaide who set up his own plastering business out here, and is doing very nicely.

It would be lovely to meet you if you end up in the area. Good luck with your move!

    Take care,

    Jackie

Hi there - I'm new to Brisbane too - having moved here from Adelaide. I'm here with my husband and 15 month old son.

I was 4.5 years in Adelaide and had lots of good friends. Suddenly knowing nobody again is a bit of a shock. I'm in the Mount Gravatt/Holland Park area. I'd love to meet up with people who might live in this general area - especially those with kids of a similar age to my son.

    Hi Jackie

I think I confused you a bit, the regular get together on a Friday at Yeronga is for the mums during the day when the kids are at school.

There is an expat meet up at southbank on the 1 May - advertised on one of the other sites but anyone is welcome. Its at 1pm they said the grass area near the swimming pool and someone was going to put a british flag (hopefully a small one) so that they can be easily spotted. I am hoping to go, so may see you there.

    Hi Deb

You must have moved to Adelaide roughly the same time as us, we spent the first 8 months in West beach and loved every minute of it but had to move out of that suburb when it came to buying a house. We have now been in Brissy for 2 years this week. I would say it is much much harder to build up a social circle in Brisbane, it all came pretty easy in Adelaide. We came back to Adelaide last July for a holiday, as we were thinking of moving back and immediately noticed how friendly the people are in Adelaide maybe its to do with being in a bigger city here in Brissy etc. I dont think Holland Park is that far from where I am.

Its like moving to a different country all over again but I can see that there is far more going on for the kids, so we will stay for the time being. If you got any thing in particular you want to ask, just pm me.

    Hi Nicola

Maybe we can catch up when I get up there. Did your kids go to west beach primary when you lived in the area and then you moved to o halloran hill. Not sure if that was you but remember a welsh family moving into west beach for a while.

    Hi Gillian

Yes, my kids did go to West Beach primary for 8 months but we didnt move to OHallaran Hill, but there were a few welsh families there. I cant say that we met any English families at West Beach though.

Are you already in Brisbane? Im a little confused as I thought one of your earlier posts said that you were already in Brisbane.

If not when do you intend being up in Brisbane. Yes, it would be good to meet up. What made you choose Holland Park - not that I know anything about Holland Park, its just interesting to find out why people choose different areas.

    Take Care

    Hi Jo
We arrived in Brisvegas in August - we also lived in Sydney (5 years) but did a stint back in the uk for 10 years. We are currently living at Upper Mt Gravatt but have seen a house in Thorneside we like. How are you finding it there? Plenty of families ?We have 3 year old /10 month boys - I think they would love being near the bay. Everyone keeps telling me that its an up and coming suburb - but not sure if that equates to dodgy!
    cheers Louise
