Well we have had around 130mm today ( about 5 inches) and there is some flash flooding in Brisbane and other areas, We are due to visit Brisbane tomorrow ( 4 hour drive) but we will cancel the appointment. forecast is for another 150 mm of rain in next 24 hours and rain continuing to the weekend. So all in all i think its fair to say.... Its a little damp, but better than last years floods...

Not much precipitation at all up here in FNQ, yet they're still insisting it will be an above average wet season.

Stopped raining south of the river but predicting worse weather from tomorrow. All Aussie day celebrations in Brisbane cancelled. Last year very fresh in minds. had emergency plannin meetings at work yesterday. Part of our home was flooding.

Although its not the same as the floods last year, which devastated so many people, we have actually found the rain far worse where we are this year.

We have had numerous leaks from our roof and have pots and pans everywhere, catching the drips. The water also flooded through our back door and into my husbands office. Luckily he had actually cleaned out his office a few days ago so there was very little on the floor - except the wooden floor which was saturated :(

Not raining at the moment......but it's lingering nearby.......

    Love

Well, spoke to soon, a few hours after I'd posted, we had a downpour, accompanied by huge amounts of thunder & lightning which, not for the first time, fried my internet router. The routers plugged into a surge protection device, but the phone line isn't so can only assume the surge was through the phone cable. I tell you, it's costing me a fortunate since we moved to Cairns with the amount of eleltrical equipment which has given up the ghost.. if the humidity doesn't do the job, the lightning will :arghh:

At least it's warm rain:biggrin: and a cursory glance does show Brisbane as having higher rainfall than London for example, so it's not a great surprise. You want to get yourself up to Cairns with 2000mm+ a year:laugh:

You should arrive just in time for their rainy winter when it is sunny and dry here :)

Seriously though, have you not heard we are experiencing our second year of excessive rain due to cyclical world weather patterns and that other years will be different?...you cannot judge weather in such a short time.

Is this weather the norm for Brisbane we are just about to apply for state sponsorship and having doubts as we get enough rain in scotland?

Rain in summer, dry in winter is the norm in the sub tropics but no, the last two years are not the norm - far more than usual. the norm rainy days >1mm in January is 7.7 (23 dry days)...we have had 12 rainy days this month with rain all day rather than storms in the afternoon.

Statistically Brisbane has the most dry days out of any capital city. For the whole of winter (June, July and Aug) the total rainy days (>1mm) is 12 with 78 days of clear blue sunshine :).

High positive values of the Southern Oscillation Index means strong likelyhood of above average rain. Look at Sep, Nov, Dec, Jan figures and if the numbers are all high positive numbers get your raincoat ready. If high negative numbers it will be extra dry.

Here is the history of those numbers. There are many dry spells but you can see why Xmas 1973/74 and 2010/11 were so wet!!!
