Hi my name is Emma and i'm new on here, i was wondering if any one can give me any help with the cost of living in oz,we are in the process of getting our visa still a long way off yet, but i would like a rough guide on how much it would cost to keep a family of 5,2 adults 3 children,in the Brisbane area, i've got family in Ipswich so i would like to live some where around there.I like some idea of rent, utilty bills, food, private health care and tax on ur wages and i've been told that you get charged to get your money out of the bank is that true ?
Also has anyone got any ideas what kind of wage a motor mechaic would get as i haven't had much luck with it differs so much from job to job,I just want an idea to see if would could surive on one wage,i do plan to work part time but not straight away,i just want to be sure that i've weighed up all the options.
    Kind regards
    Emma:wub:

    Hi Emma

    Welcome to BritsinBrisbane.

I will try and help a bit. I am assuming you are looking for a nice family area to live out towards Ipswich......rather than Ipswich itself maybe? It's not the greatest place on earth!! Anyway, somewhere like Springfield Lakes might suit you. In that area you are looking at rent from around $350 a week up for a 4 bedroomed house. That is the lowest price and would probably a very basic property, but a little bit more than that per week could get you something really nice.

Electricity - well, that can vary A LOT depending on whether you use the aircon much! When I lived in Sydney I used it all the time and my bills were around $900 a quarter.......however, the milder winters here in Qld and the fact that I live near the water and have sea breezes, means I don't use it so much, so my bills are now around $400 to $500 a quarter. A pool pump, if you have a pool uses a lot of power as well.

I have no idea how much I spend on food!!! We are also a family of 5, but I have never sat down and figured out how much we spend!!!

Private healthcare. If depends on the amount of cover you want. Basic cover can be relatively cheap, but we pay around $350 a month for our family for top cover.

Some bank account have more charges than others. If you use your own bank to get money out of our if you get cash out at the supermarket checkout or similar, you are not charged.

    Hope that helps

    Love

    Rudi

    Hi Emmaandjay,

Welcome to BIB, Thanks for joining. I saw and answered your post on PIO but you will find that on here you will get honest answers without the excitable responses you got on PIO. Feel free to ask anything and I am sure you will find a lot of information from respected members like Rudi (she pays me to say that) and cal who have more experience than me on costs for a family.
