Hi, Just been looking at Domain the real estate site and noticed alot of gated communities on there. Are they commonplace out there? and are they good for families or are they more for the "older" community. I didn't see many of these in other states I have looked at.

It depends on the community and the facilities it has, some are well setup for families and some have nothing at all. Before you sign the lease, or buy a property, get a copy of the rules. Also ask about access restrictions - some may have function rooms that look ideal for children's parties then you find out you can't use them. Briz Nurse is right, they can we really good to live in and it's nice not to have to worry about gardening, security, cleaning the pool etc....

In case it helps you most locals would call them a townhouse complex btw...to my australian ears gated community sounds like south africa with 10ft walls and armed guards :)
