Hi all, sorry to join this and moan but really need some help :frown:. been in oz for nearly 3 years and electrician hubby was made redundant 20 weeks ago and can't find any work. At the stage we nearly need to go back home as we are struggling to survive with 3 young kids. He is applying for loads of jobs but just doesn't get any response and can't seem to get his foot in the door. Getting really desperate and not sure what to do next. He has his queensland license and has been an electrician for 24 years!!!! Any help or advice really gratefully accepted. :frown::frown:

    Hi thouslay,

I wish I could offer you something positive, Normally i suggest the web sites and agencies, but after being here for 3 years you know all about them. I hope someone on here can help you find a solution and things start to improve for you soon.

I know this may not be ideal and may not be possible, have you thought of changing States. Looking to see if anything is available in another state? Or perhaps in another area of Qld? I know with kids you cannot just up and move, but if considering moving back to Uk would it be worth considering another state?

Just trying to think of things that may help.

Are you a member of poms in oz its a sister site to this, they have an electricians thread, perhaps someone on there could suggest something.

If you are not a member, take a look at thethread above.

    Hi Guys
Dont rely on job ad's. Try cold calling companys in person ,get up the white pages on line and print off a list of all companys who you think may do something in hubbys line of work.

Another option is to walk on new build sites(if its domestic work hubby does) and ask the guys working there if they know of any work or can point you in the direction of the boss.

Where in Brissy are you? Quite a few tradies i know are securing work out towards Ipswich in and around the growth corridor.

Are you on a PR visa? If so have you explained your situation to Centrelink as they can sometimes help you out finacially .

    Hope he finds something soon

Thanks for all the advice - been doing all of the above. He has tried to push through his contractors licence to at least be able to do a few small jobs for himself - been turned down though as he hasn't had his queensland licence long enough, was self employed in England but they want more paperwork than what we have to prove it. He has an appointment on mon to see if they will change their minds and if not we are heading home!!!! sad but can't go on the way we are. Thought about moving inter-state but if we have to go through all the turmoil of packing up and changing schools, making new friends again i think we may as well be back in the uk with friends and family. Can't put the kids through it again :(

    Hi there,

Dont know if this is any good but you can try it

I use an electrical contract company called Heimac Electrical.

The guy who runs it is Irish and uses a lot of ex-pat sparky's

One of his sparky's has just left and i know he has a lot of work on ( because i'm giving most of it to him) - i'm an eng manager.

Give them a call on the off chance and see what he says. They are a good outfit and always do a good standard of work.

If you have any problems and feel you want me to give him a call and see if he has any work then let me know.

You can call me at work on 0419 370 060. - Steve

Hope it works out for you.

    Steve

Ok, he went to the meeting with his brother in law to see the contractors people with loads and loads of documentation to prove that he was self employed in england for more than 5 years and also all of his electrical qualification certificates etc. It went well but a few days ago he got a letter through to say that they didn't have enough evidence that he was self employed in england and they want more documentation to prove it. We have been trawling through Companies house files since then to try and dig out more evidence so that he can appeal. they want all sorts of evidence and also health and safety regulations (which are just on the internet and need to be found and printed out) which don't really serve any purpose what so ever. It is a bit of a nightmare but he is going to give it one more try before we start packing our bags!!!!! A bit over it all now, making us loose faith in the system all together and are not tremendously happy to be here anymore :(
