[TD="class: midtext"]I have just read some quite disturbing articles about crime in Brisbane. In particular stating that the trains can be dangerous at night with muggings. I also read that Brisbane was particularly bad for burglaries. Now the train thing I am not too bothered about as I think it's highly unlikely that I will be on a train at night anyway but the burglaries does concern me as I work away and my wife and kids will be at home alone.

What is every ones opinion about these things? I know where ever in the world even in the safest of cities sensible precautions must be taken but even round Manchester, Newcastle, London and other UK cities I have felt relatively safe at night on train or walking the streets.

I think to an extent it depends where you live. The Gold Coast is having problems with crime but thats mainly bikie related. Parts of Brisbane also have higher crime ,Logan central is one of those areas ,its about 30 mins from where we live and i havent encountered one ounce of hassle whilst living here, i even feel safe wandering around the shops there when ive needed to go. The Valley which is a popular 'night spot' seems to get its fair share of crime too. As you say no different to anywere in the world but if you choose your areas carefully ,you probably wont ever have an issue. I feel much safer here than i did living in Gtr Manchester.

I imagine if you google any city on the world you could find 50 articles about crime. It is obviously all relative. I live in inner Brisbane about 4km from the city centre and I would wander about my suburb with $100 notes stuck to my forehead at 3am in the morning with little concern. In fact I'll do it tonight just to try it out

As Cal said there is the odd suburb around with a bad reputation but the good ones outnumber them by far and I hardly ever feel unsafe. What city were they comparing to when they said Brisbane was particularly bad for burglaries.....was it a properly researched and sourced comment or just one of those flippant internet comments you see? I imagine it has a similar rate to other Australian large cities and you do need to take precautions like anywhere. To give you an idea in brisbane I have my parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother in their 30's and 40's who all have had their own houses for many years. I have been robbed once, my parents twice (in 40 years) and none of the others have had their houses broken into.
