Hi, we are moving early next year to between Brisbane and Noosa and I would like to get into teaching after 20 years of working in business. Does anyone have any advice where to get information as to what training I need to do, top tips etc. All gratefully received, thanks

    Hi TCJ

    Welcome to the forum.

I guess the first question is......do you already have a degree? If you do then you may be eligible to do a 1 year diploma. You would need your first degree assessed first and you may be required to do some extra courses as well as the diploma. It may be possible to do the diploma by distance education in which case you could keep working if you wished until you finished your course. You would need to do some blocks of teaching practice though. This is basically what I did, although I elected to do an 18 month Masters degree course - I figured that if I could get a Masters degree for only 6 months more study, then that was a better option. I did my through Charles Sturt University. However, I am not sure whether this course is still running now.

If you do not have a degree then you are looking at 4 years of study to gain the necessary qualification.

Look carefully at whether you wish to teach at a primary or high school level. Primary teachers (that's what I am!) seem to be two a penny these days and you would be lucky to find permanent work. Have a look at where the shortages are for high school teachers in terms of subjects - that might be your best option.

    Hope that helps

    Love

We are moving early next year (2013) hopefully to roughly the same area but will depend on where we get jobs. I am a design & technology teacher so would be looking to continue in that field.
